Film Grand Budapest Hotel adalah film yang terinspirasi dari Stefan Zweig. Film ini dimulai dengan prolog yang dibawakan seseorang yang disebut sebagai The Author di tahun 1985. The Author disini menceritakan pengalamannya waktu dia pergi ke Grand Budapest Hotel di wilayah yang bernama Zubrowka pada tahun 1968. Ketika The Author Jude Law datang ke hotel itu, dia pun bertemu Zero Moustafa F. Murray Abraham, si pemilik Grand Budapest Hotel. Suatu ketika ia mendapat kesempatan mengobrol bareng sama Zero. The Author pun bertanya-tanya, bagaimana caranya si Zero, kakek – kakek yang terlihat miskin begitu malah bisa punya hotel sekeren Grand Budapest Hotel? Pertanyaannya pun akhirnya terjawab, Zero tidak membeli hotel itu, tapi hotel itu dihibahkan oleh Monsieur Gustave Ralph Fiennes, bekas pemilik Grand Budapest Hotel yang dulunya adalah kepala resepsionis di hotel yang sama. Zero Moustafa pun menceritakan pengalamannya bersama Monsieur Gustave kepada The Author. Pada tahun 1932, Grand Budapest Hotel kedatangan seorang lobby boy baru bernama Zero Moustafa Tony Revolori. Sebagai kepala resepsionis di hotel itu, Monsieur Gustave pun mengajarkan Zero biar bisa jadi lobby boy yang baik dan benar di Grand Budapest Hotel. Karena sering bersama, akhirnya Monsieur Gustave dan Zero makin akrab dan menjadi sahabat karib, walaupun mereka punya latar belakang dan sifat yang berbeda. Monsieur Gustave sangat terlihat necis itu bersahabat dengan Zero, seseorang anak yang lolos dari perang dan tinggal sebatang kara di Zubrowka, ia juga sangat canggung bila mengobrol dengan orang lain. Suatu hari, Monsieur Gustave akan melepas kepergian seorang nenek kaya raya yang bernama Madame D. Tilda Swinton, ia bisa dianggap sebagai kekasihnya yang menginap di Grand Budapest Hotel yang minta Monsieur Gustave buat menemani dia di hotel itu. Setelah sebulan kemudian, Monsieur Gustave dikagetkan dengan berita bahwa Madame D. meninggal secara misterius di rumahnya.
